The Beastie Boys Go Anglo

The Beastie Boys decided to add a little Anglophilia into their lives with their album "The Mix Up." Though currently an instrumental album, the band decided to add vocals to the tracks with a little help from Lily Allen, Jarvis Cocker and M.I.A.

Sounds like some good combinations...

Who Knew Legends Like Lady and the Tramp?!

Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave, Pete Doherty and Shane MacGowen all had a grand old time singing "Home Sweet Home" from the movie "Lady and the Tramp" at the Meltdown Festival on June 17th.

Here is the footage:

Likely Looks: Bat For Lashes

I admit it: I was totally late in the game for Bat For Lashes. I kept on hearing the name, hearing hoe hot the singer was, what cool head apparel she wore, and her ghostly seductive voice. After I saw her on Thom York's iTunes celebrity playlist I became deeply disappointed with myself for being so out of the loop. So, now, I give you.... my Bat For Lashes post!

I was checking out Blender, and they have this great post on one of the better music video directors out right now, Dougal Wilson. He was the one who made the amazing Jarvis Cocker "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" video. Now, he's worked with Miss Natasha Khan, the beauty and brains behind Bat For Lashes on her latest "What's A Girl To Do". The video bares more than a resemblance in look and feel (and characters) to Donnie Darko. In one full shut Natasha is riding her bike amongst suited demonic rabbits, passing my car crashes and woodland spooks. And it matches the song perfectly. Check it out here...

Jarvis Cocker at Webster Hall = Legendary

There is nothing better then seeeing one of your childhood idols in the flesh, Jarvis Cocker. It was magical, glorious, fun, perfect...fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

The one complaint of course (which I totally forgot about) is how damn hot Webster Hall gets during the spring/summer months. Even so, Jarvis walked out in a perfect suit jacket and opened up with "Fat Children". It was also quite nice to see Steve Mackey by his side performing.

Jarvis was extremely chatty and really made an effort to bond with the audience. He seemed thankful for all the support as well...

Here is the setlist:

Fat Children
Don't Let Him Waste Your Time
Heavy Weather
One Man Show
I Will Kill Again
From A to I
Tonite
Big Julie
Disney Time
Big Stuff
Black Magic (where Jarvis encouraged people to dance and spoke about old ballrooms with springs from 60 years ago)

Cunts Are Still Running The World
State Trooper

Absolutely brilliant...

Jarvis Can Waste My Time, Anytime

It seems like only yesterday when I was a little BritPop, twee tween when I bought my first Pulp album. After the first sultry coos of "Common People" I was done for. Jarvis Cocker had taken my teen crush virginity and had smashed both Paul McCartney (the Beatle years, duh) and JTT (the Home Improvement years, duh) out of my life.

Now that Pulp is officially(??) dead and his solo career(??) is afoot, let's get back to drooling over Sheffield's finest (sorry, Alex Turner).

Exhibit A: "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time", The Video.

More dry comedy about shitty boyfriends, helpful cabbies and running over the city gentry.

Exhibit B: Jarvis Cocker: The NYLON Interview

My favourite magazine (yup, I said it) gets deceitfully domestic with Jarvis.... the killer.

It's big, I'm sorry!

The Verdict:

"Cunts Are Running The World" (download this. NOW.)

Well said, Jarvis. Only a true pop icon could get away with that and still get paid.

In summation, his solo effort could be the springboard of something akin to Morrissey, only sexier and more fun. Let's let him know we care. Jarvis will be out on April 3, but you can pre-order it here.

Also, word on the street is Jarvis is planning a US tour as well in the major US cities! It will heal a bit of the pain from missing Pulp multiple times (can you say Irving Plaza?!) so I'm quite excited!
