Yeah Yeah Yeahs Add LA + SF Shows

Thank GOD I didn't buy a ticket to Lollapalooza and end up living on those grimey, marble-stared streets of Hollywood. YYYs have just announced an LA and SF show in addition to their festival performances on the east coast.

Here's an excerpt from their MySpace bulletin announcing the shows:

We are playing two shows in the sunshine state on this very limited, very special august run.
8/21 – San Francisco, CA - The Fillmore – on sale Aug 5 @ 10am
8/22 – Los Angeles, CA – The Mayan - on sale Aug 4 @ 10am
Be smart and take those on sale times with more than a grain of salt!
SEE YOU SOON

Coldplay Go Latin

Coldplay seems to be quite influenced by their surroundings according to the latest written posting on their official website. Their upcoming album (due later this year) has been partially recorded in Spain which caused the Latin influence to their new tracks. The messages states, "No maracas or castanets...but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires and Barcelona".

Now judging that Coldplay really hasn't changed their sound much since they started, these tracks should be quite interesting.

Ex-Zuton Already Forms A Supergroup

Ex Zutons guitarist Boyan Chowdhury honestly wasted no time leaving one band and rushing off to form another. Last week, Chowdhury announced he would be leaving the Zutons due to "musical differences" and it seems there are no hard feelings...both Chowdhury's new project and The Zutons are on each other's top friends on MySpace.

The band is called The Gravity Trap and they are (so far) quite good. Consisting of Graeme Robinson (ex The Stands), Luke Thompson (The Cuckolds) and Ronnie Mintor (The Miracle Cure), they already have two tracks available for download on their MySpace page.

Maximo Park Live At Webster Hall

Maximo Park is a band I have missed time and time again when they come to New York. Finally, last week I got the opportunity to see Newcastle's finest perform to a packed (and mental!) house at Webster Hall.

Paul Smith has always been one to entertain. I am sure he's taken a load of karate classes because at the rate he is goes on stage it appears he's a black belt. The crowd was so into it...I was almost blown away by the reaction the band was getting for each song. Singers, jumpers...and I don't think they were Brits for once!

Hopefully, they come back around because I won't miss them again...ever!

Here is the set list:

'Graffiti'
'A Fortnight's Time'
'Now I'm All Over The Shop'
'Our Velocity'
'Parisian Skies'
'The Coast Is Always Changing'
'Girls Who Play Guitars'
'Want You To Stay'
'Karaoke Plays'
'Books From Boxes'
'By The Monument'
'Apply Some Pressure'
'Your Urge'
'The Unshockable'
'Going Missing'
'Nosebleed'
'Limassol'

Their sophomore release Our Earthly Pleasures is out now on Warp Records.

Amy Winehouse Really Might Need To Go To Rehab...

Amy Winehouse is someone that is expected to do some cancellations here and there but LATELY she doesn't play more often than usual.

After canceling her gigs last few gigs and making a "comeback" in Cornwall last night she was well...an absolute mess. Spitting into the crowd, changing lyrics to swear words and all the other good things that come with being crazy.

Maybe she really does need to go to rehab...

Dirty Girls Really Do Get (Almost) Clean...

God bless Courtney Love...she's 43 and looks better then most 20 year olds (apparently due to anorexia...thats why she popped an Ensure onstage mid show at Hiro) and she still sounds damn good.

I had the pleasure of seeing Courtney at Hiro on Thursday and she was fucking brilliant. It was everything you wanted it to be...from one liners about how she could "go all night...I'm like Springsteen" to "the bass sounded like a fart can you tune it please." The set was filled with a few old favorites (complete with a lyrics sheet in front of her for "Northern Star") and a ton of new stuff. The new stuff is everything you think it would be...raw and edgy but with a pop edge (thank you Linda Perry).

Here is the set list from the gig:
'Samantha'
'Malibu'
'Stand Up Motherfucker'
'Sunset Marquis'
'Miss World'
'How Dirty Girls Get Clean'
'Pacific Coast Highway'
'How Dirty Girls Get Clean Pt 1'
'Letter To God'
'Loser Dust'
'Celebrity Skin'
'Doll Parts'
'Never Go Hungry Again'
'For Once In Your Life'
'Northern Star'
'Happy Ending Story'

Mark Ronson Plays (Yes PLAYS!) Highline Ballroom NYC

Its no surprise that Mark Ronson decided to make his U.S. live debut in his now home town of New York. Filling Highline Ballroom to the brim and strapping on an electric guitar, Ronson performed tracks off his album Version opening with "Inversion".

No album with guest vocalists would be complete without a show with guest vocalists. Alex Greenwald from Phantom Planet stepped in to do his cover of Radiohead's "Just" before launching into the OC classic "California" as well as Daniel Merriweather performing "Stop Me" to finish off the set. No Amy or Lily stepping in to do their guest vocals...but helping out a bit with "Valerie" was Tawiah.

Ronson barely touched a turntable and no one fucking cared. Fantastic gig and proof that Ronson can do a hell of a lot more then make good records...

Here is the setlist (courtesy of NME.com):
'Inversion'
'God Put A Smile'
'Toxic'
'Apache'
'Good Girls'
'Ooh Wee'
'Didunt Didunt'
'Pretty Green'

Likely Looks: Rilo Kiley - "Moneymaker"

I've been down with Rilo Kiley since they were convincing us to "do the frug." I have been fruging ever since.

Their sophomore album The Execution of All Things is for sure in my top 50. They have this beguiling simplicity to their songs (which are beyond simple), and Jenny's Lolita croon gets me every time.

On their fourth studio album (out August 21 via Warner Bros.) Under The Blacklight has been getting a bunch of buzz (check out their cover story in the latest issue of Filter Magazine), but the only track I've heard so far is their first single "Moneymaker." It's a Rilo Kiley tune, but... funky. Yeah, not country, not Omaha, not pop.... funky. Mega bass lines (provided by Miss Lewis herself) and libido-heavy lyricism. To see what I mean, check out the video:

Hot. Hot. And more Hot. Bonus points to the blonde who calls herself "Faye Runaway"--not a really porn name, but still awesome... and kinda dirty.

Likely Looks: The Rakes "The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect"

Neither of us broads have really spoken out about how great the new Rakes album is. Sure, it doesn't have the same guilty, drunken, renegade 20-something without a cause feel as their debut, but it's got some perspective. Take their latest single "The World Was A Mess But His Hair Was Perfect." As the name suggests, it's a jab against all those dirty, pretty things queuing up outside the newest hipster hotspot, oblivious to the headlines or anyone else.

The video for the song captures that aloof quality, featuring the band as apathetic hairdressers (not on fire). Check it out...

Though the hyperactive tracks seem to be The Rakes' forte, my personal favorite would have to be the ballad-esque "Little Superstitions." Listen for yourself...

Likely Looks: Matt & Kim vs. Flosstradamus - "Yea Yeah"

Our buddies at IHEARTCOMIX have sent us another gem. Who knew a keyboardist and a drummer who only played Brookylyn (essentially) before releasing their food-fight inducing smash-pop (I just made it up, like it?) debut could have this much success? And these many remixes. But, Matt & Kim are in the honored circle of cool friends like Flosstradamus, Kid Sister, A-Trak, Ocelot, etc, etc.

That's the cool thing about IHEARTCOMIX. They're DIY indie/punk rock kids with an insatiable appetite for dancin'. This Flosstradamus remix of Matt & Kim's breakout hit "Yea Yeah" is the beautiful harmony of those 2 qualities come to life by the adorable animation and muppet-like host created by Demonbabies, who provides all the sweet visuals for any IHEARTCOMIX soiree.
