The Teenagers Get Randy in LA

Being a French filly myself, I couldn't resist representing the frogs on Wednesday at Spaceland for The Teenagers' 2nd LA show. I've had "Homecoming" on nearly all my On-the-Go playlists for almost a year now, and am simply addicted to that song when my "word of the day" starts with a C and ends with an unt. So, enough of me, here's my review from ARTISTdirect.

There's nothing more titillating on a lonely, rainy, Los Angeles night than a Parisian in America. Those lucky enough to be at Spaceland Wednesday night, got not one, but three, when Paris' electronically-inclined, cheeky, punk trio The Teenagers played their second ever LA show. The boys were also joined by two adoptive Teenagers, a female drummer and guitarist, on loan from England for their mini-U.S. tour. Led by the pencil-thin, ambidextrously-sexy singer Quentin Delafon (who somehow manages to make an Archduke Ferdinand-groomed mustache hot), they garnered gasps, giggles and dancefloor shuffling from the LA crowd as they soaked up the lazy talk-sung, dirty-disco tunes that would even make the lascivious Serge Gainsbourg blush.

The Teenagers showed off their aloof rebellion by blazing through the tracks form their soon-to-be-released debut album, Reality Check. During a lull from technical difficulties, Delafon dipped the mic in the audience, as an Australian girl shouted, "When are you coming to Australia?!" Delafon considered that a good enough audition as he pulled up the rock-aficionado on-stage to provide guest vocals on their triple-x ode to easy, American girls, "Homecoming." They played other notable pre-album release hits, "We Are The Teenagers" and "Fuck Nicole" to round out the night—which felt more like a night spent in the the backseat of a sedan with steamed windows than a concert.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Add LA + SF Shows

Thank GOD I didn't buy a ticket to Lollapalooza and end up living on those grimey, marble-stared streets of Hollywood. YYYs have just announced an LA and SF show in addition to their festival performances on the east coast.

Here's an excerpt from their MySpace bulletin announcing the shows:

We are playing two shows in the sunshine state on this very limited, very special august run.

8/22 – Los Angeles, CA – The Mayan - on sale Aug 4 @ 10am
Be smart and take those on sale times with more than a grain of salt!

BRMC Video Shoot In Downtown LA

BRMC. Love those leather clad dudes. And for the record Peter Hayes really drives a black motorcycle. I've seen it.

BRMC and Little Radio have a long history together. They're buddies, and BRMC are such good mates that they're going to shoot their next video for "Berlin" at Little Radio. For those of you who don't know what Little Radio is (NY is off the hook... kinda), it's an awesome company that has a few different incarnations. Firstly, it's a web-based radio station that plays awesome music and has DJs like Annie Hardy from Giant Drag on their Monday night show GTFU, Anne Lee from Princehouse Records, and man about town DJ Myles Hendrick (also of Bloodcat Love.

They are also a rad music venue in the arts/warehouse district of downtown. I've seen Sonic Youth there. It blew my mind. And, now BRMC will be playing the stage. Check out the info below:

Also, I'm sure most fo you now about the internet radio rates inflation of royalties. PLEASE help stop this bill from passing, otherwise Little Radio probably won't be able to do cool events like this anymore. Go here to help out! SaveNetRadio.org

The Broad(s) Do Coachella

It's like Peter without Bjorn & John... like Razors without any Light... it's like--okay, I think you get it.

Sadly, there will only be one broad sweatin'/struttin' her stuff in the desert this weekend. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it. And, that someone juts so happens to be LA Broad. Me.

So, I was tooling around on the Coachella site, and found that you can do a totally dorky thing and make your own schedule. Here's mine:

LA Broad's Coachella Schedule

That is where I am going to attempt to be at... and I will fail. But, the one place I will NOT miss (shocker) is JAMC. I don't know if I can properly express my love for this band in text form. But, if they play "Almost Gold" I think I might pass out. Also, did everyone hear about Scarlett Johansen possibly doing backing vocals (??!!) at their Pomona show tomorrow?

BULLSHIT.

If they let her sing "Sometimes Always" I might have to... well, I won't do anything but be pissed off. Wonder what Miss Sandoval is up to these days...

I will try to give you up-to-date blogs about the shows and send you silly (read: drunken) pictures of rock stars doing silly (read: drunk, embarassing) things. It's top-rate music journalism here.

Who else is going? What are you seeing? Are my picks lame? (read: They're not.)

Let the games begin....

Annuals & Bob Mould Play NYC Benefit Show

Annuals have been havin a GREAT few months and possibly an even better week. I heard that their shows opening for Kaiser Chiefs have been amazing and that NYC was officially rocked by them last night.

In case you missed them, Annuals along with Bob Mould and Radio 4 will be pitching in for a VERY good cause. The bands will be playing a benefit show for J Robbins’ son Callum Robbins who has just been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He is only 16 months old.

Here's some more info on the show and Callum:

"The disease affects the brain's ability to communicate with the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing, and swallowing. Type 1 SMA is usually fatal; most Type 1 babies will die before their second birthday. Those infants who survive into childhood are in for a long road of occupational therapy, wheelchairs, and assistive devices. Despite years of work on its treatment and "ongoing promising research," it has no cure.

Most of you may know the great J Robbins. He's a twenty-year veteran of the D.C. independent scene, and has played in and driven such amazing musical acts as Government Issue, Jawbox, Burning Airlines and most recently the excellent Channels. He is an icon in independent thought and music and has probably recorded and/or produced half the albums you listen to. He's an amazing individual, and because so often bad things happen to good people, he is also in need of help.

Fortunately, there are good people who want to do good things. Sam Fogarino of Interpol has decided that the music industry needs to come together and help, so on April 16th there will be an excellent show to benefit Callum. It's going to be an amazing show, and it's for an even better reason, so if you can come out, please do."

Here are the details:

A Benefit for Callum Robbins
**Featuring Bob Mould / Radio 4 / Harmony Rockets (Feat. members of Mercury Rev) / Annuals (8pm)
Monday, Apr 16, 2007 7:00 PM EDT Doors
at The Bowery Ballroom
Tickets are $25

Since this is a benefit, there is no list (obviously), so please help out and buy your tickets here!

Read more about Callum and SMA. Callum thanks you!

Sonic Youth Daydream Again

According to the band's website and other sources, Sonic Youth are not only going to be doing 12(!) shows where they'll play Daydream Nation in its entirety, but they will also be re-releasing the classic.

It's a huge mother: 2X CD and 4X LP. Man, a new album last summer, a rarities album at Christmas and now the grand-daddy of re-releases. Either Thurston and Kim have some bills to pay, or SY is on a roll.

Disc 1 features:

-Home demo of "Eric's Trip"
-Remastered tracks of 1988 original

Disc 2 boasts:

-15 live tracks recorded from the Daydream Nation tour
-"Within You, Without You" from Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father - an NME-sponsored charity Beatles Tribute album
-"Computer Age" from the critically-acclaimed Neil Young tribute album The Bridge
-"Electricity" from the Captain Beefheart tribute album Fast And Bulbous
-Cover of Mudhoney's "Touch Me, I'm Sick," originally released as a Sub Pop single

Not bad.
And of course, Sonic Youth will be making their second appearance at Coachella this year, representing the old band that never broke up camp.

Just to remind you that Thurston Moore is still cooler than you, here's an interview from SXSW conducted by the incomparable Filter editor Pat McGuire:

The Sky Drops Make Us Feel Important

This post is very special to me. This is the first time a band has approached the Broads and asked us to post about their music/shows. I feel so validated! Who are the validators (wow, why isn't there a band called that? They don't exist on MySpace--take it, but give me credit... and a percentage!)--I digress.

Wilmington, Delaware band The Sky Drops have made us an official blog. They sent a polite and direct email with links to their music. I have to say I didn't have high hopes, but... they're good. Like, really good.

The Sky Drops have a very "now" sound. They attribute "Indie / Psychedelic / Shoegaze" as their fitting genres. But, they're not partying like it's 1995. The band have a knack for delivering each song with a different angle, but maintaining their core sound. They perform maudlin/lovesick tones that evoke Nada Surf on MySpace opening track "Hang On", while they switch to droney version of The Vines (hey, I like them) with a dash of Beulah on "Now Would Be."

A blurb from the band's bio writes:

"The Sky Drops are Rob Montejo and Monika Bullette - a superforce of guitars, drums, and vocals. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, the band members each have their own fine pedigree and began The Sky Drops in the Autumn of 2005...Rob and Monika's beautiful harmonies are intensified by swimming blissed-out guitars and no-nonsense drumming. The Sky Drops have been likened to a "shoegazing Everly Brothers."

The band have released an EP called Clouds Of People that hit stores (?) via Fridabear Records in 2006. The band are now on tour, with a slew of dates extending to late July. If they're coming to your hood. I highly recommend checking them out. I did.

Art Brut Make Me Want To Rock Oooout

This should be an obvious statement to all 13 of you who read this blog. Art Brut rule.

Their debut Bang Bang Rock & Roll was a great album that came to my attention via, erm... NME and lead singer/talker Eddie Argos' "feud" with Kele Okereke (I believe the term "fatty" was tossed around). But, I read beyond the trash, and carried onward. I dug up the album and fell in love. May I remind you a little lyric from "Formed A Band": We're going to write the song / That makes Israel and Palestine / Get along.Sheer fucking genius. Eddie, I'm sure Jonathan Richman is proud.

So, fast forward to now. They're Pitchfork darlings, they've played NYC 1,673 times, closed last year's Coachella (in a tent, but hey...) and just finished their second album. It's called It's A Bit Complicated, and it is. Well, moreso than songs like "Little Brother" and "Fight!".

During Summer '06 the band started peddling around new material. One of which was my favorite bootleg of last year: a song called "Nag Nag Nag Nag" (eat that, Cabaret Voltaire). The song is sung by little man lost Eddie Argos with an opening riff stolen right off the Orient Express and lyrics that beg the question, "When will I grow up? And do I really want to?"

Lucky us! They've recorded it. In a studio. Professionally. And here it is, with another gem... "Pump Up The Volume". Eddie, Christian Slater is proud.

Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag

Art Brut - Pump Up The Volume
|Real Player | Windows Media|

The band have a quick US tour that includes these dates:

Art Brut April Mini Tour
Apr 17 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
Apr 18 - Brooklyn, NY @ Studio B
Apr 19 - Toronto, Ont @ The Mod Club
Apr 20 - Chicago, IL @ Subterranean
Apr 21 - Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour

As if that wasn't enough, band showoff, pointer-extroirdinare and power-chording guitarist Jasper Future shows you 10 Steps to Guitar Genius. Professor?
