2007's Latest Supergroup Is...

Lily Allen, James from Klaxons, Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal! Spilling the beans at Glastonbury, (where he was running around with Lily Allen's plushy costumes all weekend) Turner spoke about the collaboration between all the artists.

He said to the Daily Mirror: “It’s definitely happening. We’re recording an album. It will be out before you know it.”

All acts in some way have already collaborated with each other so its not too much of a surprise. Now, what will their name be???

What comes with DJing is well, producing and Lily Allen has done just that. Producing a track by Justin and Alan called "LIDL REBL" its definitely got the ska infused bit of Lily that everyone loves.

White Stripes Rock The Fillmore (aka Irving Plaza)

Last Tuesday was a day for celebration! Icky Thump, their new release came out and to make everyone happy the band did a special show at Irving Plaza.

It was absolutely brilliant, the set list was unreal and the band were the way I remembered them...fun, talented and not the same band that I could ever see at Madison Square Garden. Plus, the crowd went MENTAL when Meg got up to sing "Cold, Cold Night".

Here is the setlist:
01 "When I Hear My Name"
02 "Dead Leaves"
03 "Icky Thump"
04 "Cannon"
05 "John The Revelator"
06 "My Doorbell"
07 "I’m Slowly Turning Into You"
08 "Jolene" (cut short)
09 "Hotel Yorba"
10 "I Think I Smell A Rat" (Jack teases "Misirlou")
11 "Effect And Cause"
12 "Apple Blossom"
13 "Same Boy You’ve Always Known"
14 "Catch Hell Blues"
15 "St. James Infirmary Blues"
16 "Cold, Cold Night"
17 "I Want to be the Boy to Warm Your Mother’s Heart"
18 "You’ve Got Her In Your Pocket"
19 "Astro"
20 "Union Forever" (lyric tease to "Little Cream Soda")
++ Jack's caffeinated NYC sightseeing day*
21 "Blackjack Davey"
22 "Black Math"
23 "Let's Build A Home"
----
23 "Blue Orchid"
++ Jack's squirrely standup#
24 "A Martyr For My Love For You"
25 "I Don't Know What To Do With Myself"
26 "Ball And A Biscuit"
27 "Bo Weevil"

(via The Modern Age)

If only the world could have seen this show. All I know is that it made me fall in love with Jack and Meg all over again.

Lily Allen Vs Cheryl Tweedy Round 24252323623

Lily Allen has a mouth on her...we all know that. Then again, I love her for it and I think speaking her mind makes her the anti pop star...

Her appearance at the Glastonbury festival this weekend proved to be just another way to take a blow at Cheryl Tweedy from Girls Aloud. After thinking enough was said from both parties, Allen dedicated the song 'Cheryl Tweedy' to "someone VERY unspecial".

Then quick witted Lily changed the lyrics from "I wish I looked just like Cheryl Tweedy" to "I'm glad I don't look like fucking Cheryl Tweedy."

Ha ha. Let the war continue. But honestly Cheryl...give up now because you know you're gonna lose.

Lily Allen Vs New Young Pony Club

Lily Allen has a new enemy in Tahita Bulmer from New Young Pony Club.

At their performance at Glastonbury while Miss Lily was watching from the side of the stage, Bulmer threw a mic stand in Lily's direction and said, "It is a token of my love...take it as a souvenir." The mic stand was inches away from missing Lily.

Lily quickly left the set half way through and who knows whats going to happen next...MySpace Lily blog anyone?

Albert Hammond Jr. Does Webster Hall

When Albert Hammond Jr first came out with Yours To Keep I was a bit hesistant to even give it a chance. Now its an album that is constantly on rotation no matter what day it is.

Seeing Albert for the second time at Webster Hall since the Blender party at SXSW, the show was just as good if not better than last time around. Albert played tracks from the debut album, two covers (of course Postal Blowfish by Guided By Voices and a Cars cover) and several new songs which you couldn't really understand what the hell they were called.

The band together sounded super tight and Albert really has emeged as a frontman. Maybe for the 4th Strokes record Julian can step aside?!

Likely Looks: Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Down Boy"

Do I really need to say anything to introduce this?

The EP that features "Down Boy"—as well as 4 other songs that were written and recorded in 2004 in between their massive touring schedule for Fever To Tell— called Is Is comes out on July 25 on Interscope. If you can't wait until then, I highly recommend their live DVD that came out in 2004, as well, Tell Me What Rockers To Swallow. it's a live concert movie of their performance at the Fillmore in San Francisco. The DVD also comes with some neat features, like a Spike Jonze directed mini-doc that interviews YYYs fans.

But, don't let me convince you to buy it, I'll let Karen do that....

"IS IS isn't your mommy or daddy's EP
Bad.
Suggestive.
Wrong.
Yes. Yes. YEAH! What's a summer without a little stinking trash to roll around in? We've got the garbage oh yeah we do, dumped into five songs to encourage bad listening habits. YYYS would love to heat up and bother you at a loud volume, so please help us help you and seek out our new tunes? Some of you may know a few of these songs, we've been terrorizing with them at our shows for years, Rockers to Swallow, Down Boy, 10X10, WE GUARANTEE YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD THEM LIKE THIS BEFORE, nor have you heard them ALL. We deliver them to you with a snarl this July accompanied with new videos all shot in the dark at a very intimate show we threw last month. We cannot tell you how EXCITED the three of us are to drop this music in your laps, our mouths water at thought of you listening to RTS (ep's first track) in your car stereos.
Summer nights are made for this shit.
This shit IS IS made for summer nights.

THE EP
Songs for the EP were written in 2004 in between touring behind their first record Fever to Tell.
Written amidst one of the most turbulent and emotionally unstable periods in YYYs history, for whatever reason the angst that colored that point in time translates erotically into a sexually charged body of songs. On their choice of producer, Karen O intones; "Nick Launay was the natural choice having produced PIL Flowers of Romance, collectively a favorite between us. I put that record on and want to stuff my mouth with raw hamburger meat.". Is Is is an expression of similar sordid energy, the rawness is unavoidable and good for you too!

THE FILM
YYYs have captured all this excitement in the EP recordings. In fact, they love playing them so much they’ve made a special live film to accompany the EP with co-directors KK Barrett (Sofia Coppola films) and Lance Bangs (video director - Sonic Youth, Nirvana and producer of Director’s Cut series of DVDs – Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham). Recorded in night-vision at Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on 7th May, the band played 2 sets that night to just 100 lucky fans each time – the first for a mixed audience and the second for females only. There will be 2 filmed versions of lead track Down Boy – one live, and one to EP audio.

EP TRACKLISTING: 1.Rockers to Swallow* 2.Down Boy* 3.Kiss Kiss 4.Isis 5.10x10*. *previously only available on the Tell Me What Rockers To Swallow live DVD with the exception of Down Boy, a demo version of which appeared on a limited edition split 7” single with Liars in Japan and Australia. FORMATS: The EP will be available on CD, double gatefold 7” vinyl, single track download and digital bundle in addition to a special USB stick. All formats will carry all 5 tracks, making this a special, non chart-eligible, release.

Please note – EP title is “Is Is” with a space in between the first “s” and the second “I” whereas track “Isis” has no space.

Confused?

Don’t be."

BRMC Video Shoot In Downtown LA

BRMC. Love those leather clad dudes. And for the record Peter Hayes really drives a black motorcycle. I've seen it.

BRMC and Little Radio have a long history together. They're buddies, and BRMC are such good mates that they're going to shoot their next video for "Berlin" at Little Radio. For those of you who don't know what Little Radio is (NY is off the hook... kinda), it's an awesome company that has a few different incarnations. Firstly, it's a web-based radio station that plays awesome music and has DJs like Annie Hardy from Giant Drag on their Monday night show GTFU, Anne Lee from Princehouse Records, and man about town DJ Myles Hendrick (also of Bloodcat Love.

They are also a rad music venue in the arts/warehouse district of downtown. I've seen Sonic Youth there. It blew my mind. And, now BRMC will be playing the stage. Check out the info below:

Also, I'm sure most fo you now about the internet radio rates inflation of royalties. PLEASE help stop this bill from passing, otherwise Little Radio probably won't be able to do cool events like this anymore. Go here to help out! SaveNetRadio.org

Mark Ronson ft. Lily Allen - Oh My God

Mark Ronson seems to be making video after video these days for the tracks off his upcoming album (already out in the UK though!) "Version". This time around he pairs with a cartoon version of Lily Allen to give the Kaiser Chiefs cover a bit of a kick

Also, check out the appearance of Ricky and co. as they get a little Lily loving in the end

Nice Ronson appearances in the video as well!

The Books of Albion - Excerpts

BEWARE! This is a long post but its totally worth every minute of it. The Books Of Albion: The Collected Writings of Peter Doherty is out now in the UK and Times Online has provided a nice chunk of excerpts from the book to get into that mysterious little head of his:

Read away!

Pete Doherty’s journals open in early 1999 when he turned 20 and was living in London, performing poetry and launching his first band, The Libertines

10th February 1999

Southbound on the Northern Line towards the inaugural Paradigm Poets parade down at the Poetry Place in Covent Garden. John Citizen, Victoria Mosely (yeah, related) et al will be gagging and groaning before a cluster of lucky souls, although my own role in events is somewhat unclear. I am an official Paradigm Poet, and attended the Holland Park photo shoot some weeks back. Tonight I shall be asked to perform. Laters. * * * One wonders if the Britpop era will eva [sic] be looked back on with any affection. I sincerely doubt it . . .

Everyone agrees that Blur and Supergrass have written their best stuff in their later albums — and the 2 most coveted bands of the 90s era (Radiohead & The Verve) had nothing to do with Britpop. Pulp is a little less clear-cut. They excelled — and probably came to define Britpop — with the Common People performance at Glasto. Not so much with the song (a song with no merit compared to much earlier, and indeed much more recent work), but with their capacity to gather the attention of all who watched . .Guitars are not hip, not quite, not quite yet again.

* * *

The boy stood on the burning deck

It was half past nine on Friday

His braces snapped his trouser fell

He wasn’t very tidy

* * *

Things to do

I - I must at all costs recover the £350 from dear lunatic Justin

II - I must make a concerted effort never to trust entirely another human being, Frank excepted.

III - I must strive to improve my diet. Fruit, vegetables, brown bread & water. My addiction to fried chicken has become horrifyingly close to Tabloid material.

IV - I must try to surround myself with a few more stable & sure characters, lest I allow the worst in me to be dragged out and pampered . . .

V - I must purchase a black bowler hat.

* * *

A stunning reception for my opening set at the Foundry last night (25/2/99). The first time I think that my poetry has ever been met by cheers & crys of delight. A great shame that Time Out spelt my name wrong.

* * *

Francesca has given me the surprising, confusing and rather upsetting news that I am to be a father. A mere child myself, in will and conduct, how might I take responsibility for this pill-related fiasco? Something I must do. She sounds sure and frightened & uneasy, & ready to laugh.

I must gather my thoughts.

Another concern is my growing attraction to & affection for Lorraine: a quite perfect English girl I met briefly as we crossed over jobs at the Vaudeville, and met up with on Sunday for a day of quite unexpected tenderness.

We met as planned outside High St Kensington Tube and walked in the cold drizzle towards the park amidst a sorry, soggy crowd of Sunday shoppers & grimacing motorists. What a pretty picture I paint . . . but so light was my spirit as I walked with her. A ballerina trained at the Royal School of Ballet she has grace, poise and an enviable body. Witty and open — but somehow on guard as well. Through Kensington Gardens in the suddenly beautiful rain. The green of this city is so sudden, so shocking, I react always as if a mile or three of this sparse open space was Arcadia itself . . .

We talked of prostitution, our mutual friends in the theatre, ballet, people passing. Then she bought me a pint. We meet again tomorrow. I’m off to hers with my guitar.

The housing benefits inspector arrives soon. Bastard that he is.

* * *

Francesca is not pregnant after all, although she was terribly ill last night and must wait another three days for a final, decisive test. Everyone has disappeared..

23rd April 1999

Peter and John have discussion on linguistics and their relation to the primary emotions. Steve sniffs a marker pen. Sasha sits beneath a blanket. Carlos is being reprimanded for lateness. For the past part of this afternoon The Libertines were resident at Daylight Studios Kentish Town — our first rehearsal, and a chance for everyone to finally see what Sasha’s drumming is like . . .

The studio bloke was smacked up to the eyeballs. Nothing of great import to relate other than that we do seem capable of great things occasionally, and with training and a strong wind behind us, great things will no doubt become daily occurrences.

* * *

This begins in spring 2005, while in a recording studio with his second band, Babyshambles, recording its debut album Down in Albion . Pete and Kate Moss have begun their relationship, and he is in love . . .

Hold me in your arms and I want for nothing . . . but your sweet scent, your soft, supple body & skin & I in disorder, “boring” you with the junky business . . . writing again and making love all day with your beautiful self — Lay there, back to me, defiant in your defiance. Well f*** you, I love you, & I do and I do and I do . . .

* * *

Last night after festivities or rather derangement of the senses in Kate’s Cannes Hotel room . . . mirrors were smashed & I covered my love & the whole room in Bloody Mary. Well now we’re on the flight back to London from Nice & that was the first “holiday” I’ve had in so long, well, since Prison really. Now the Boeing 767 glides us home through a fantasy of clouds. * * *

Written while staying in Kate’s country house in the Cotswolds

In the birdsong lullaby of a summer morning & lull I tiptoe to the window around which is wound a noble tangle of leaves and — oh glorious — red, white & blue roses . . .

You lay sleeping . . .

I kiss your sleepy head & shoulders, and I’d kiss your shadow’s reflection . . . although if you’re still vampiring it up you’ll not have a reflection my sweet. I reach for your hand . . .

You are asleep though even as I write this you stretch and scratch & wiggle now & sigh . . . & settle again. I kiss your face, shoulders & neck with many sweet salty tasting kisses.

* * *

Kate my love Kate my sweet I scrawl at dawn & can’t wait for patience . . .

I would betray my fate before I would my heart in fact I’d betray the whole world & all in it before betraying my heart . . .

I mean to say you have my heart although you are kicking me in your sleep & so you don’t love me . . . oh but you do. say “I love you so” and my senses are ransacked, raised to cinders . . .

* * *

How can I throw myself into her when she’s off so often & my cough & my rough foot skin appal . . .

Never seen anything like it in my life she’s amazing dancing rolling her shoulders in her cut up dress I’m so wrong I know but if she loves me I’ll scream with joy an eternity of shy shadows glancing at myself I could cry for numbness but my days I’m prone to believe and watching her dance to Ike & Tina Rivers Deep Mountains High is all that matters and all that will ever.

* * *

The paragraph below is written by Moss, who left a message in one of Doherty’s journals

You have touched my heart and soul, little f***er I wish you wouldn’t ring on my door now go I could kiss you again and float way. You make me high, my sweet, my skin shivers and Longs to be held by you.

An account of a trip to Paris for the designer Hedi Slimane’s birthday party, and events on the Eurostar back to England, in July 2005

Back to the story? Kate & I f***ing and fighting all the way on the Eurostar until finally blood runs down my palm & up my head, and before I leg it to oblivion leaving her at the station calling me a this that & the other and a so-and-so (accompanied by hand gestures) and the dramatic exit just on queue [sic] as my deranged senses all aflame moving away from the flashion bulbs of the ninja papperazi’s and dear old Jimmy Mullord sticking a left hook right in the mush of one of the photographers — “smack!” he caught him a good ’un I will say so meself . . .

Must make note to follow up myself given the pleasure & excitement I felt when James cracked the photographer one cheered us both and I think my dear manager needed to release some tension here or there . . . of late the goodwill of Fate leads us not unto hell-in-a-handcart, but still to f***-knows-where via temptation itself. Shameless have we been, scene after scene, piping, pinned and powdering notes on planes. . . debauching it at the airports all over Europe . . .

Back to now and a summer dawn rains down on London. in again laden with newspapers full of tabloid mumble jumble about our exploits in Paris. Vaguely, surreally connected to the truth. . . redtop rags seem to have a new resolution: to write absolute shite about “the troubled rocker” and his supermodel girlfriend. The words they put into my mouth . . . honestly the cut, paste & twist of the gutter journalist: will they not desist this shit

Written while accompanying Moss on a work trip to New York.

“Come on. . . you’ve got to get out of this room for at least an hour.”

“Why?”

Debris, ash, tin lids for egg plates, towels, cds, wraps, snaps . . .

My she is restless, endless energy, spirit, shaking her hips & shoulders to rock and roll in leather zip trousers & stripey T-shirt & one heel what a picture. I am still in bed because my body craves rest and though tis like a grave resting here so idly I cannot fathom New York or the world until the knot loosens further. I don’t suppose she’ll wanna read through another Hancock script.

* * *

Written during the Babyshambles tour, autumn 2005

waking up unable to breathe in a dark dusty bunk on a pitch black bus (the driver refusing to waste energy.) where is everyone? where am I? Any drugs about? Is the chemical khazi still blocked?

The bus had its moments of claustrophobia & extreme paranoia . . . but also a sense of togetherness was evident across the tour-map. . . from town to town, forgetting the entourage & everyone else, the band was a band, intent on playing as a band and delighted only when crowds kicked off and truly embraced us.

* * *

Notes while at home in his London flat

10 vals a day & you know what else though does leave me a little shaken & withdrawn. Tucked up in bed with 9 mini Martells. the walls are covered in indecipherable poetry sprayed on in blood . . .

* * *

For single mothers everwhere in love with crackheads you are a shining light of hope.

* * *

An aside while reminiscing about smuggling girls into his bunk on early tours with the Libertines

Nothing I’d rather pummel than the smug face of a freelance tabloid photographer.

* * *

I miss you miss Moss the most

* * *

Aint it just my luck? It’s said that to write in red is all bad luck upon the writer’s head . . . and oh no, f***, every night I’ve been writing in blood red blood and now the nick is all in sight again: could it be with the lighter dim . . .

* * *

In early 2006 Doherty spent time in prison while awaiting a court case. It prompts a more reflective mood.

Years of shambling living and intense & dedicated crack & smack abuse have proven to be an obvious but equally problematic in retrospect introduction to the desired abstinence that I must be laying foundations for in this the first leg of the court order.

* * *

His reaction to pictures that appeared to show Doherty injecting an unconscious girl, April 2006

On the way to Amsterdam, feeling calm, together & fairly smart at Heathrow. A nice, quiet day relatively anyway. Sally sorted out all the flights and I am sat in the bar at Heathrow. A gin & tonic & cigarette or two. Splendid. The only way to travel . . . Outside the bar & my head, the real world carry’s on in its carnage & I oblivious to current furore concerning the alleged “Administering a noxious substance” photographs in the gutter press.

* * *

Pete and bandmate Mick Whitnall have been to Portugal and been fitted with implants designed to prevent them from consuming heroin. Doherty has retreated to Moss’s country house and is writing in his den — her potting shed

Was supposed to report to Stoke Newington police station today but am potting shedding it in extremis licking my wounds And I here at the country home of my true love whom I pity for I am but at present a lumpen burden I detest. I must straighten up . . .

* * *

Back in Kate’s garden — time has passed

The disarray around me belies (else I lie) a fairly sound & tidy state of mind. My dear sweet love would appear to be in somewhat of a rage perhaps due to my being decamped to the potting shed this cold rainy night and her having a pop thusly: (I having claimed to be “working on songs”)

“You’re sat here in your hovel in your own shit, wallowing in self indulgence.” The lord knows it’s a consistent response that occurs to her to air. Any time I might stop, write, strum & “indulge” a creative urge I am naught but a vainglorious swine & a c**t of the highest order. Oh what nonsense I nervously scrawl in the dark dark country night . . .

I have been informed that my behaviour reached an all time low during the recent visit to Thailand . . .after deportation I was thinking along the lines of being single. Folly such a thought, my heart aching & swimming & I dearly missing Kate despite being convinced that the relationship was an unbearable & intolerable disaster. However influential my raging drug addiction upon matters is not really up for debate but still I found myself incapable of justifying all the pain & general disfunction of much of the affair. And so I flee/am booted out . . . part of me retains a contradictory belief that I can learn from the shame & strain of my awfulness & become a better man by default. There’s hope for us all, right? why not.

And so I remain in the freezing . . . potting shed, scribbling away and attempting to tidy up amidst a wee tiff with the birthday girl. [If Doherty’s “birthday girl” is Moss then this entry was written on January 16 of this year]

* * *

I have been banging up I confess, and yet my use is extremely moderate and controlled what am I saying? Kate will not tolerate this shite I wouldn’t blame her, and alongside the fixing neither of us seem to completely trust each other although I love her and no other and the tiffs & tumults come between magical happy times. the most cherished hours are those spent in her arms . . . so why this suspended feud? oh I dunno, she certainly knows how to get a rise out of me. Or tears. Or low-flying guitars. Is it me trying to avoid the reality of my most antisocial habits, or is there any defence in these debates that I can confidently use. . . and so I sorry selfish c*** I might well be . . .

It is divinity itself, true love, and hell is the heart’s terrible palpitations as a “turning” is in the offing. All I wish for is for her to come and lead me back out of the dark.

I aim to write a great deal more than I have and also to make a blinding record. Godspeed the light.

Her timing is impeccable as always. . . footsteps

* * *

In early 2007 Pete checked in to rehab in the Nightingale hospital near Paddington in London.

Further tabloid infamy yesterday just when I thought everything was too good to be true. Some Australian arseholes have me on camera phone banging up and apparently slagging Kate off. Bang to rights I suppose although to be fair I was in a hell of a state at the time and we had fallen out.

F*** it. The last few weeks together have been so loving and so much positive looking to the future. It makes me sick to my heart but I must face it. I love the girl so dearly and that’s why I’m in this fucking clinic isn’t it? Another 36 hours clean now and sticking to it this time I fancy.

* * *

3pm, 29th Jan 2007

So there’s a silent pop as I find the vein & launch a great shift into my system. Eye-closing, jaw tightening speedballing through the opening hours of my detox at the Nightingale Hospital, Lisson Grove. It begins now, does the rest of my life.

* * *

3am, 31st Jan 2007

And onwards, through time & these sterile corridors of the clinic you follow me. 36 hours in and not much to show in the way of withdrawals (only vomiting though that may have been the final line of sticky sparkling gak that I had concealed in my pillow) foolishly before the very dawn.

I now surrender to the science of detoxification and pray that Godspeeds the worst of it and Saturday morning at the latest will see me once more in my love’s loving arms. We have been close this time that passed and with the smack and needle free we shall marry in the summer and I become ten times happier than any given smackhead. Huzzah!

The White Stripes celebrate the release of their new album "Icky Thump" (in stores now and brilliant might I add) with not just the typical vinyl, CD and iTunes ways of purchasing BUT allowing fans to buy the album on limited edition Jack and Meg USB flash drives. They are mini Meg and Jacks and absolutely darling.

The show at the Fillmore last night was absolutely out of this world. Review coming soon!

For now log onto www.whitestripes.com to get your flash drive though...they are ace!

...Hard Fi! Wow I bet all of England is jumping up and down for joy. Then again, maybe they are? I think I would have been a bit more thrilled if they said someone a bit more exciting but I'm not going to Glastonbury so oh well...

To all those that are going, enjoy Hard Fi.

Please note that I do like Hard Fi but its not as exciting as if someone said the word RADIOHEAD.

Mystery Jets Are Who's Next?

Ah, it's time again for the music industry's new media popularity contest: Yahoo! Who's Next?

All the bands du jour (and some not) sidle up against each other in a contest to see which marketing company/publicist has the most contacts in order to get their band the most votes. Perhaps I'm being a bit cynical. Does anyone even use Yahoo! Music? Or am I just completely off-base?

Anyhow, one of my favorite "new" bands (who recently canceled their summer US dates) Mystery Jets are in the running for this month's "Who's Next" campaign. They're up against LA's dreampop unit Great Northern, someone I have never heard before called John McLaughlin but probably sounds like Josh Groban taking a bath with Jack Johnson, and finally the hardest working girl in obscurity England's Carina Round.

So, it's a no-brainer: vote for the 'jets....

Their US-only EP Zootime will be out on Dim Mak and they will eventually make it out here for a full US tour late in the summer.

The Maccabees Live At The Knitting Factory

The Maccabees have been a favorite of mine ever since I laid eyes on the "First Love" video months and months ago. Hailing from (of course) the UK, these 5 Brits finally brought their fantastic pop punk britpop fusion over to this side of the Atlantic for a short tour with Bloc Party and The Noisettes.

Making a quick NYC stop at the Knitting Factory on June 6th proved to be a spectacular debut as The Maccabees went above and beyond all expectations in their live show. Full of energy, they bounced around singing tracks from their debut album Colour It In as I sang and danced along with them.

Honestly, this is one of the finest debuts ever and a band that is going to blow your mind once you really give them a chance. So, give them a chance!!!!!!

New Cribs Tour Dates

The Cribs know my needs. My needs are to see those three unwashed pop geniuses sweat on me and possibly dribble just a little bit of beer and blood on me. Thank God they know me so well, cos they've just announced their newest string of US tour dates. Here's the word from their official MySpace:

"The Cribs have announced a run of new shows in America and Canada around their appearance on the Main Stage at Lollapalooza.

The Cribs US Dates

(*note these dates are in UK format day/month/year...)

28.07.07 Seattle, Washington - Capitol Hill Block Party
29.07.07 Vancouver BC - Richards On Richard

07.08.07 Toronto, Ontario - Lees Palace

10.08.07 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Johnny Brendas

Support bands for these dates will be White Rabbits on the East Coast and Sean Na Na on the west, including Minneapolis.

The Cribs x"

Nice opener choices, but Sean Na Na doesn't surprise me. Sean Na Na is the more palatable, indie-rock stylings of the reforming Har Mar Superstar (aka Sean Tillman). These guys are a fixture in the LA scene, and are definitely buddies of the Cribs. Minneapolis is their hometown, so no surprise there either.

The Cribs' Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever is, again, an amazing record. I cannot urge you enough to go out and buy it when they release it on July on Warner Bros. BUT, if you just can't wait to have that Wakefield brogue whispered in your headphone by the Jarmans, you can download it (from any country) on iTunes here.

Likely Listen: Mister and Misses Howl

This is a metaphysical Likely Listen, kids. It's intangible, but we like it that way. This band only kinda exists. There's no music, but hey! They've got a press photot! It's good enough for me. Just grab your bong and start feelin' it. Or grab some pills... or acid... I'm not quite sure what would fit the mood best. I am talking about the upcoing "collaboration" between Giant Drag's Annie Hardy and ex-beau Joe Cardamone of Icarus Line.

Just look at that photo! It's gonna be fucking amazing. For those of you who are fans of GD, you might be interested to know that Annie's album swan song, "Slayer" was actually written by Cardamone and is featured on the Icarus Line's fantastic new album Black Lives At The Golden Coast, which will be out on Dim Mak later this summer.

But from the looks of the tangled web of Icarus Line's MySpace friends, it looks likes Cardamone has an addiction to side-projects. Check out his UK-based Souls She Said. The band released an EP last year on the now-defunct Alan McGee label Poptones. Maybe that is how they befriended William Reid and ended up opening up for JAMC at their pre-Coachella warm up show. Wow, isn't MySpace great?

I can't wait to hear what the ex-lovers come up with. And I'm guessing that acid-laced hash is probably the best chemical comfort for their tunes... just a thought.

Likely Looks: Bat For Lashes

I admit it: I was totally late in the game for Bat For Lashes. I kept on hearing the name, hearing hoe hot the singer was, what cool head apparel she wore, and her ghostly seductive voice. After I saw her on Thom York's iTunes celebrity playlist I became deeply disappointed with myself for being so out of the loop. So, now, I give you.... my Bat For Lashes post!

I was checking out Blender, and they have this great post on one of the better music video directors out right now, Dougal Wilson. He was the one who made the amazing Jarvis Cocker "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" video. Now, he's worked with Miss Natasha Khan, the beauty and brains behind Bat For Lashes on her latest "What's A Girl To Do". The video bares more than a resemblance in look and feel (and characters) to Donnie Darko. In one full shut Natasha is riding her bike amongst suited demonic rabbits, passing my car crashes and woodland spooks. And it matches the song perfectly. Check it out here...

Likely Listen: Kaiser Chiefs "Getting Better"

In honor of me seeing the Kaiser Chiefs as a pre-birthday celebration this week in LA, I thought I'd post the video footage of their 40th anniversary Sgt. Pepper's cover.

I'm not clear on how the songs were broken down or if the band had any say, but Kaisers have tackled the McCartney penned and sung "Getting Better." Ricky does a pretty nice job with the high registered notes, but seems a bit nervous. Maybe the finished product will have a better sound. Nick vocals are, as always, a bit shrill, but complimentary nonetheless. I mean, no one can be Paul. Nick's drums sound rich and full, while Whitey's guitar has enough reverb to keep true to the notes and give it a modern touch. The songs are all recorded on reel to reel, juts like in the good ol' days. Check out the boys' Beatles impressions here:

As a sidenote, has anyone seen their huge stage banner that is a TOTAL rip-off of the Beatles 1966 tour?

The Horrors Live At Pianos

I have a love/hate relationship with The Horrors as the last time I saw them it was a red hot mess and it truly sucked (Studio B during CMJ). This time around they played Pianos to a semi packed house and it could have been one of the most interesting/amusing shows I've ever seen.

The Horrors definitely know how to put on a show even though the music isn't honestly all there to back them up. Faris comes out to the audience and decides to start mosh pits and hang on ceilings which makes for a nice visual. When it comes to image the band are on point.

Highlight of the night was when Faris grabbed a little dancing girl and her friend tried to join in on the fun...when she did she slipped and fell flat on her ass. Call me evil but I haven't laughed that hard in ages.

Here is the setlist:

Likely Listen: The Airborne Toxic Event

This band isn't new to many of you in the LA area who are avid show attendees. The Airborne Toxic Event (the name is a nod to Don DeLillo's novel White Noise) started out a little over four months ago, and suddenly shot out into the scene. The homegrown band, and brain child of frontman Mikel Jollet, released a three track EP that sold out within the span of their first few shows, garnered a residency on Monday nights at the Echo in February, opened up for the Horrors and littered themselves around the stages of Silver Lake and Echo Park hot-spots.

They just got back from a quick UK tour, where (unsurprisingly) the ravenous, NME-ingesting crowds loved 'em. Now they're back in LA and are slated to open up (as the only support band) for Kaiser Chiefs at the Henry Fonda this Thursday.

Not too bad. But is it too soon?

What do they sound like, you ask? The singer/guitarist/songwriter Mikel Jollet definitely has clear influences. Though the base of the music is a fusion of angular, amplified guitar jolts ala Franz Ferdinand and Orange Juice, the vocals display more than a hint of Conor Oberst and Morrisey—with a dash of Edwyn Collins for some cred. They're an energetic, fun, very "now" band, and the kids sure do seem to like them. I'll be out at the Kaisers show to give you a full update on how their rising stardom is received by the LA crowd.

They band have also unveiled their new (and first!) video for their ode to stalking ex-lovers post breakup, "Does This Mean You're Moving On?":

Mark Ronson Tells You What To Listen To

It's not enough that he has his hands twidling knobs (wow, did I really just type that?) on all of our favorite UK hits, or the fact that he's got his own awesome album, Version coming out--no, no, nooow Mark Ronson has to dictate what music is worthy enough for his ears. But what great ears they are...

Ronson teamed up with Hard Rock Cafe to make the first in what will be a series of mixes curated by Ronson. He chose everything from the bouncy brit-pop of Kaisers Chiefs, the pint-size (bite-size?) PJ Harvey infused cover of "Wicked Game" by Giant Drag to... Buckcherry? We'll forgive him the one grievance. Maybe he's being ironic? Regardless, it's a great selection of songs that I have been mixed expertly by Ronson pal DJ Doug Grayson, and the best part is that you can download the entire thing right here:

Mark Ronson Presents Hard Rock Vol.1

And if you want to know what you're downloading, here is the tracklisting:

TRACKLISTING:
1. “Black Tambourine” - BECK
2. “I Like the Way” – BODY ROCKERS
3. “Everyday I Love You Less and Less” – KAISER CHIEFS
4. “To Be Young” – RYAN ADAMS
5. “Take Your Mama” – SCISSOR SISTERS
6. “Island in the Sun” - WEEZER
7. “Dimension” - WOLFMOTHER
8. “Destination Diamonds” – DIAMOND NIGHTS
9. “Black Betty” - SPIDERBAIT
10. “Bout to Get Ugly” – MARK RONSON feat RHYMEFEST and ANTHONY HAMILTON
11. “June Gloom” – THE LIKE
12. “Tropical Moonlight” - DOMINO
13. “Wicked Game” – GIANT DRAG
14. “Lit Up” - BUCKCHERRY

If you're like me and can't just own digital files and need the whole package, you can buy the CD exclusively from Hard Rock Cafe & Casino locations, and from the Hard Rock e-store here.

To boot, a dollar of every album sold will go to benefit "Water For Life," a Jay-Z baked charity that works towards bringing clean drinking water throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

NEW MARY CHAIN ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No secret here, I'm probably the most avid JAMC fan 'round these here blog parts. So, when I stumbled upon the Uncut interview with Jim about the reunion and what the future held for JAMC, I nearly wet myself... okay, maybe I did... just a little.

Here's a little news-age I wrote for work (ARTISTdirect: go. now. we're good.)

Leave it to the Jesus & Mary Chain to blow all other "reunion bands" out of the water. In the latest issue of Uncut, one of the more venerable UK music rags, Jim Reid reveals phase two of the Mary Chain. Speaking to the magazine, the crouching and crotchety lead singer said, "The reunion is not necessarily about any nostalgia trip. There will be a new record, otherwise there wouldn't be any point to reforming." Don't think statement is a side-effect of the reunion high. Both Jim and William have been making records throughout the JAMC hiatus. Jim formed Freeheat with ex-members of The Gun Club and former JAMC bassist Ben Lurie, while William has been releasing a string of experimental and sparse indie rock albums under the moniker Lazycame.

Fans coming out the the band's live shows have gotten a glimpse of what the proposed new album will sound like with the newest JAMC track in over 9 years with "All Things Must Pass." The new tune is a continuation of their Munki-era songs, complete with Jim's signature sardonic and moody lyrics and William's antagonizing riffs. Though the album is still "officially tentative" according to a representative for the Scotland band, if all things go according to plan (aka if Jim and William don't kill each other), JAMC will hit the studio in late fall after their extensive summer tour.

Longtime JAMC fans may also be excited to hear that the guitar-smith of the Mary Chain, elder brother William Reid, has been working on a solo record of his own. Recording the album in Los Angeles earlier this year, the album has no title, no record label funding, but William has released his first single from the forthcoming album called "Ono Yoko" on his official MySpace page.

—The ARTISTdirect Staff

06.01.07

I'm such a smarty-pants. Fuck. I'm so excited.

What do you all think? Does anyone like Freeheat or Lazycame? Lazycame is William being fucking weird and is definitely a left field extension of Munki and Freeheat is basically Jim making a mash-up of Stoned & Dethroned and Barbed Wire Kisses (b-sides, muthafuckah).

I'd put my money on their new record being AMAZING, and blowing all these rip-off bands out of the water.

Exhibit A:

I'm in love... all over again.

Icky Thump Leaked by Q101 DJ

DJ Electra on Chicago's famous rock station Q101 officially leaked Icky Thump much to the dismay of Jack White and crew. She got the album from a friend of a friend and the rest is history.

Now my question is, how the hell did Q101 play this record without permission from SOMEONE! Whether it be the band, management, the label...SOMEONE I just don't know what got into her that she decided to play the record on such a prestigious station.

Here is the blog entry:
God, what a day. Here's what I can tell you.

At 2pm today, during my show, Q101 became the first station in the world to play the new White Stripes album, Icky Thump. It's awesome. It's really, really, unbelievably brilliant and awesome. I was giddy and excited to share it with fellow fans.

At 4pm today, Jack White called Q101's main offices from Spain, where they're touring, looking specifically for me, to yell at ME for leaking the album and, in part, being "messed up for the entire (music) business." (Edit - I listened to the call again today, and I apologize for initially misquoting Jack.) I felt like I was going to throw up. Weirdest, most surreal conversation of my life.

So Sherman and Tingle were on the air when Jack called. They took the call with me in the studio, off the air. Jack asked me to take responsibility for leaking the record, and asked if I was sorry for what I'd done. S&T both jumped into the call - I was clearly flustered - and backed me 100%. We tried to explain where we were coming from - someone gave us a copy of a record that we were really excited to play, and the whole experience was an hour-long lovefest for him and his band - but he wasn't having it. He hung up, very, very angry, and I thought I was going to cry. Instead, I drank some beers that the Fix had left in the studio. Room temperature Bud Light. Delicious.

After speaking to Jack's manager and getting their side of the story, Spike and I went on the air with S&T to open up the situation to the listeners. We respected Jack's desire not to be on the air and didn't re-air the call, but we talked about what was said and what happened. I'm extremely grateful to everyone who called in supporting us. I don't think I am helping to ruin the music industry. I think I made people excited for the new White Stripes record. I know that was our intention.

I also still think Jack White is an incredibly talented musician, and I still think the new record is amazing. I just don't think I'll be able to listen to it without feeling like crap for a good long while.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Well, at least those lucky Chicago folks got to hear the record!
