A Bit Of What We Are All Missing At Coachella...

If you aren't spending the last day now in the currently hot Palm Springs for the Coachella festival then we are all going to have to attempt to figure out just HOW good a time everyone is having there.

It seems like there are celebrity sightings galore from Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lindsay Lohan to Mischa Barton and Adam Brody (all good festivals slowly but surely become a celeb fest) and the suites are in full blast (DKNY Jeans, Motorola, GQ). Of course it should be about the music but these days it isn't anymore.

Regardless, the photo that MediaEater captured of Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys captures everything about what Coachella SHOULD be about...

Now for the caption: "Holy shit I am playing in the middle of desert and loving it"

I love Coachella. Maybe next year I won't slack and I will make sure to go.

To come is LA Broad's full review

Arctic Monkeys Do "Brianstorm" On Kimmel

The Arctic Monkeys have hit America for what should be a whirlwird of press, gigs and other sorts of fun stuff to entertain us with.

While LA Broad is basking in the beautiful California sun in Indio for Coachella, I get to watch some really cool YouTube clip of "Brianstorm" live on Jimmy Kimmel. Its almost as cool as being at the festival...uhh not really.

Amy Winehouse Gets Remixed

Amy Winehouse feels like the new queen of getting her songs remixed. From Hot Chip to Ghostface Killah and now Mr. Jay Z himself...there is a never ending supply of Winehouse remixes floating around.

This time, Jay Z does a remix of "Rehab" and I'm sure it will be damn good. I guess his love blossomed for Amy's music when he saw the Joe's Pub gig a while back.

Also, The Rumble Strips do a great remix of Back To Black. Of course, I wouldn't leave you hanging so here it is

Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (The Rumble Strips remix)

Thanks to Music Like Dirt for the MP3

Enjoy Amy at Coachella (jealous jealous jealous!)!!!!!

(Not So) Icky Thump

Now I was a bit worried that Jack White has went to rock star husband land and would totally forget how to make a good song but HOLY SHIT the first single from "Icky Thump" (which is also titled "Icky Thump") is absolutely brilliant.

XFM premiered the single and its like Meg and jack entered Frank Zappa/Jimi hendrix land and lost themselves in a sea of guitar and noise.

Can this band do ANY wrong?

The fine folks at Idolator have provided an MP3 of "Icky Thump" which you can download HERE

I heart Jack White...even in his dumbass mariachi outfit.

The Broad(s) Do Coachella

It's like Peter without Bjorn & John... like Razors without any Light... it's like--okay, I think you get it.

Sadly, there will only be one broad sweatin'/struttin' her stuff in the desert this weekend. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it. And, that someone juts so happens to be LA Broad. Me.

So, I was tooling around on the Coachella site, and found that you can do a totally dorky thing and make your own schedule. Here's mine:

LA Broad's Coachella Schedule

That is where I am going to attempt to be at... and I will fail. But, the one place I will NOT miss (shocker) is JAMC. I don't know if I can properly express my love for this band in text form. But, if they play "Almost Gold" I think I might pass out. Also, did everyone hear about Scarlett Johansen possibly doing backing vocals (??!!) at their Pomona show tomorrow?

BULLSHIT.

If they let her sing "Sometimes Always" I might have to... well, I won't do anything but be pissed off. Wonder what Miss Sandoval is up to these days...

I will try to give you up-to-date blogs about the shows and send you silly (read: drunken) pictures of rock stars doing silly (read: drunk, embarassing) things. It's top-rate music journalism here.

Who else is going? What are you seeing? Are my picks lame? (read: They're not.)

Let the games begin....

Hopefully all New Yorkers can figure out a way to beg, borrow or steal to get a ticket to the Gramercy Theater but for now you just might have to sit back and wait for the Likely Broads review of the gig!

and FYI if you don't own the self titled release you need to. I am nice and am making your life easier by allowing you to click HERE to purchase it.

Lily Allen + New Look - Gucci = Funny

I am into equations today...sorry. Lily Allen could quite be the most honest girl on the block and she could care less about who/what she rips on. This time around she killed two birds with one stone by making it quite obvious how much she HATED the heinous Gucci bag the company sent her but also that it looked like something Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud would wear.

from Fashionista.com:
"Allen heaves the bag out of its packaging, takes one look at its gaudy detailing and, instead of squealing with girlie delight, wrinkles her little button nose and laughs in mock horror. “It’s so heavy,” she says; then adds, “It’s soooo Sarah Harding”, referring to the brash, blonde Girls Aloud member, before delivering her final, damning verdict: “It’s f***ing vile.”]

Lily's line for New Look comes out May 9th so be on the lookout. Here are some selections from the line...

Oh and here's the bag...uhhh TOTALLY agree with Lily on this one

Jarvis Cocker at Webster Hall = Legendary

There is nothing better then seeeing one of your childhood idols in the flesh, Jarvis Cocker. It was magical, glorious, fun, perfect...fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!

The one complaint of course (which I totally forgot about) is how damn hot Webster Hall gets during the spring/summer months. Even so, Jarvis walked out in a perfect suit jacket and opened up with "Fat Children". It was also quite nice to see Steve Mackey by his side performing.

Jarvis was extremely chatty and really made an effort to bond with the audience. He seemed thankful for all the support as well...

Here is the setlist:

Fat Children
Don't Let Him Waste Your Time
Heavy Weather
One Man Show
I Will Kill Again
From A to I
Tonite
Big Julie
Disney Time
Big Stuff
Black Magic (where Jarvis encouraged people to dance and spoke about old ballrooms with springs from 60 years ago)

Cunts Are Still Running The World
State Trooper

Absolutely brilliant...

Everyone's Talking About...FOALS

...well maybe just me but honestly its all I've been listening to. Foals are a 5 piece from the UK (where else?!) that make the most brilliant stuff I've heard in a long time. A touch Bloc party, a touch Arctic Monkeys, a bit of Shy Child and you'll get a bit of what Foals sound like. Then again this is all my opinion so DON'T hold me to it.

You just have to listen for yourself as I'll get all gushy and talk about how much I love them for pages and pages. I'll refrain...

Mika Covers The View's "Same Jeans"

Maybe a bit old news...but I don't care. Mika covered The View's "Same Jeans" on Jo Whiley's Live Lounge on January 31st.

You can listen HERE but unfortunately its a YouTube link. Sorry...I'll eventually learn to be a bit more crafty with turning fancy things into MP3s.

Listen for the odd little bits of Brimful of Asha that Mika ads in and Walking In Memphis as well.

I really have a soft spot for this dude...I don't know what it is but he's not afraid to take risks...and thats why everyone loves Mika.

Oh...that and he's uhhh pretty much the next Freddy Mercury (BOLD I know...but see him live and you'll get it)

Its Official - Lily Cancels US Tour

Here comes Lily's latest blog entry from her MySpace page:

Hey Guys ,
I'm writing to tell you that I have cancelled many of my May and June tour commitments in America . The reason for this , is because my mummy and daddy are very rich , and I have never been in a position where i have actually had to do any hard work before . I thought that being a popstar meant going out getting trashed with famous people and sleeping in all day . The fact that this is not true has come as a huge dissapiontment to me , and as a result I am throwing the towel in .

No but seriously , I have been on tour with this album for a year now , I have fulfilled every commitment up to this point . I am tired , but more than that I don't think I have been giving my best performances recently . I have been getting really drunk because i've been so nervous about doing bad shows , and I don't want people spending money on a going to see a show that isnt the best it could be . I am not falling apart at the seems , I am not suffering with exhaustion , I am not pregnant , and I am not going to rehab . I will be here in America , promoting the album and also starting to write the second album , which I am beyond excited about . The LA and New York shows will still be happening , and I am still playing Coachella and Bonaroo and all the other festivals .

I'd like to apologise to anyone who has bought tickets , but you can get your money back , if you take 'em back to the place you bought them from .

You know what...I totally respect her for this. The girl has been touring America over and over again and its just enough. Lily can still take the piss out of herself as well. Viva La Lily!!!!!!

The Stooges - United Palace Theater 4/9

This week in New York was mental! A show a night, afterparties galore and a nice sleep on Saturday...yes I slept till 2 PM. The week all kicked off with The Stooges at the United Palace Theater.

I actually made my way up AGAIN to the United Palace Theater on 175th St to see the legendary Stooges. It was going to be hard top the amazing SXSW performance they put on at Stubbs BUT it was pretty damn close.

The band opened up with Loose once again and the set was pretty similar to the Stubbs set. Energy was completely the same...Iggy still blows my mind at almost 60, Mike Watt seems like the most friendly man in rock and roll (even on stage I get that vibe) and the Ashetons are still cool as fuck with their sunglasses on stage.

Iggy once again called the crowd up to get on stage and it got crazy! Iggy made sure that everyone that wanted to got on and stayed on stage (even telling security to lay off people they were kicking off).

Here's the set:
Loose
Down on the Street
I Wanna Be Your Dog
TV Eye
My Idea of Fun
Dirt
Real Cool Time
No Fun
1970
Mind Room
Fun House
L.A. Blues
Skull Ring
Trollin'

Encore:
1969
She Took My Money
Not Right
I'm Fried

If the Stooges are still playing in your area make sure you go see them! If you hate it I'll give you a refund (how's that!)

Annuals & Bob Mould Play NYC Benefit Show

Annuals have been havin a GREAT few months and possibly an even better week. I heard that their shows opening for Kaiser Chiefs have been amazing and that NYC was officially rocked by them last night.

In case you missed them, Annuals along with Bob Mould and Radio 4 will be pitching in for a VERY good cause. The bands will be playing a benefit show for J Robbins’ son Callum Robbins who has just been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He is only 16 months old.

Here's some more info on the show and Callum:

"The disease affects the brain's ability to communicate with the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing, and swallowing. Type 1 SMA is usually fatal; most Type 1 babies will die before their second birthday. Those infants who survive into childhood are in for a long road of occupational therapy, wheelchairs, and assistive devices. Despite years of work on its treatment and "ongoing promising research," it has no cure.

Most of you may know the great J Robbins. He's a twenty-year veteran of the D.C. independent scene, and has played in and driven such amazing musical acts as Government Issue, Jawbox, Burning Airlines and most recently the excellent Channels. He is an icon in independent thought and music and has probably recorded and/or produced half the albums you listen to. He's an amazing individual, and because so often bad things happen to good people, he is also in need of help.

Fortunately, there are good people who want to do good things. Sam Fogarino of Interpol has decided that the music industry needs to come together and help, so on April 16th there will be an excellent show to benefit Callum. It's going to be an amazing show, and it's for an even better reason, so if you can come out, please do."

Here are the details:

A Benefit for Callum Robbins
**Featuring Bob Mould / Radio 4 / Harmony Rockets (Feat. members of Mercury Rev) / Annuals (8pm)
Monday, Apr 16, 2007 7:00 PM EDT Doors
at The Bowery Ballroom
Tickets are $25

Since this is a benefit, there is no list (obviously), so please help out and buy your tickets here!

Read more about Callum and SMA. Callum thanks you!

Pete and Carl Reunite Onstage

Holy shit...what amazing news. After catching Carl and Pete staying in Kate Moss' house while she's been in LA who would have thought they would appear on stage together a couple of days later?

The reunited pair played:

'What A Waster'
'Death On The Stairs'

Sonic Youth Daydream Again

According to the band's website and other sources, Sonic Youth are not only going to be doing 12(!) shows where they'll play Daydream Nation in its entirety, but they will also be re-releasing the classic.

It's a huge mother: 2X CD and 4X LP. Man, a new album last summer, a rarities album at Christmas and now the grand-daddy of re-releases. Either Thurston and Kim have some bills to pay, or SY is on a roll.

Disc 1 features:

-Home demo of "Eric's Trip"
-Remastered tracks of 1988 original

Disc 2 boasts:

-15 live tracks recorded from the Daydream Nation tour
-"Within You, Without You" from Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father - an NME-sponsored charity Beatles Tribute album
-"Computer Age" from the critically-acclaimed Neil Young tribute album The Bridge

-Cover of Mudhoney's "Touch Me, I'm Sick," originally released as a Sub Pop single

Not bad.
And of course, Sonic Youth will be making their second appearance at Coachella this year, representing the old band that never broke up camp.

Just to remind you that Thurston Moore is still cooler than you, here's an interview from SXSW conducted by the incomparable Filter editor Pat McGuire:

The Cribs "Men's Needs" Video

Thank you, Wakefield!

Here is the first full glimpse of The Cribs' supposedly single-laden third album Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever. The boys flew out to Los Angeles the weekend of SXSW (very tricky, Jarmans) to film the first(?) single's video. The band decided to stick with their theme of using arts & crafts video-making pastiche, but you know, added a naked chick. Though, said naked chick does seem to have it in for the boys... oh well. No use crying over a spilled drum kit.

"Men's Needs":

Also, since I'm on a SPIN kick, here's an interview they did with the boys and Alex Kapranos while they were finishing up the album in NYC. Check it out here.

SPIN Are Gettin' It Right

After recent years of having to endure shit like this...

oh, and...

this

SPIN have finally gotten it right. With this...

It's great cover and the story is really interesting and current. I love the photography. The idea. The outcome. It's great. The story is also something everyone has been dying to get to the heart of. Why is Johnny Marr in Modest Mouse? Well, now you'll know. BUT... I can't help but feel like my alma mater did this before. Ahem.

But, we're talking about SPIN! It's a sign of the times that the publication's website has seemed to be the forefront of the company, rather than its print counterpart. SPIN.com have been instrumental in bringing the clout and prestige of online magazines up to where it is now. They were some of the first to have daily bands features/MP3s. Artist Of The Day is still something industry marketers/publicists cream over. Trust me, I've been there. So, it's nice to finally see the print publication catch up with its little bro.

One can only hope that the content keeps on the up and up. Good luck, kids!

Check out a preview of the story here.

Noel Gallagher + Solo Record = BRILLIANT

Noel Gallagher sometimes just can't make up his mind. Is he in Oasis, is he not in Oasis (remember THOSE days?). Well, Noel has just revealed to the world that a solo album of songs that are all his (can we just call it the follow up to Don't Believe The Truth sans Liam tracks?) is on the way.

Since appearing at numerous charity benefits and shows Noel was inspired to do something all by himself. Apparently he's got a nice selections of songs that have been piling up and not fit for an Oasis record. BRING IT ON!

Also, Oasis has pretty much finished up the follow up to Don't Believe The Truth. Celebration............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No You Can't Stop The Rock

Linda Reid is the luckiest girl in all of Scotland. Sure, her brothers are curmedgeon geniuses which probably makes for some interesting crimbos. But on the flip side, they like to keep all their musical endeavors in the family.

She's the girlish vocals behind the Jim/William Reid "side-project" and Linda's solo career Sister Vanilla. Her debut album (which was recorded over nearly a 10 year period) is finally getting a proper release. It came out a few weeks ago and I still have yet to get it, but waaay back in 2002 when William released his solo effot Lazycame, he included a track with his siter called "Pastelblue (w/ Sister Vanilla)". It's a listless lullaby about writing songs, listening to the Pastels and crashing cars; a normal day in the life. You've also heard her before if you've done your Mary Chain homework. She lends the vocals to "Moe Tucker" on the Chain's swan song (perhaps not anymore) Munki.

Now there's also a video for what appears to be her first psuedo-single "Can't Stop The Rock". It's a little boring, but clever. Apparently, not even old age can stop the rocking of cigarette smoking, tea drinking and aggressive letter-writing.

Here's some MP3s that have been floating around for a while for your pleasure.

Sister Vanilla - "Can't Stop The Rock"
Sister Vanilla - "Pastelblue"
Sister Vanilla - "Jamcolas"

Thanks To TeamCleremont and The Yellow Stereo for the MP3s!

And what synchronicity! Lessons From Things has a lovely Sister Vanilla MP3 posted today, too! NOTE: That picture is not Linda. Phew. For more, check out Sister Vanilla on MySpace.

The Sky Drops Make Us Feel Important

This post is very special to me. This is the first time a band has approached the Broads and asked us to post about their music/shows. I feel so validated! Who are the validators (wow, why isn't there a band called that? They don't exist on MySpace--take it, but give me credit... and a percentage!)--I digress.

Wilmington, Delaware band The Sky Drops have made us an official blog. They sent a polite and direct email with links to their music. I have to say I didn't have high hopes, but... they're good. Like, really good.

The Sky Drops have a very "now" sound. They attribute "Indie / Psychedelic / Shoegaze" as their fitting genres. But, they're not partying like it's 1995. The band have a knack for delivering each song with a different angle, but maintaining their core sound. They perform maudlin/lovesick tones that evoke Nada Surf on MySpace opening track "Hang On", while they switch to droney version of The Vines (hey, I like them) with a dash of Beulah on "Now Would Be."

A blurb from the band's bio writes:

"The Sky Drops are Rob Montejo and Monika Bullette - a superforce of guitars, drums, and vocals. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, the band members each have their own fine pedigree and began The Sky Drops in the Autumn of 2005...Rob and Monika's beautiful harmonies are intensified by swimming blissed-out guitars and no-nonsense drumming. The Sky Drops have been likened to a "shoegazing Everly Brothers."

The band have released an EP called Clouds Of People that hit stores (?) via Fridabear Records in 2006. The band are now on tour, with a slew of dates extending to late July. If they're coming to your hood. I highly recommend checking them out. I did.

The Mariachi Stripes

You have to give them credit for being creative... in ways to look ridiculous. I'm just glad Satan Jack White is out of the picture.

I quite like Stereogum's Three Amigos take on the cover.

That's it. Icky Thump!

Art Brut Make Me Want To Rock Oooout

This should be an obvious statement to all 13 of you who read this blog. Art Brut rule.

Their debut Bang Bang Rock & Roll was a great album that came to my attention via, erm... NME and lead singer/talker Eddie Argos' "feud" with Kele Okereke (I believe the term "fatty" was tossed around). But, I read beyond the trash, and carried onward. I dug up the album and fell in love. May I remind you a little lyric from "Formed A Band": We're going to write the song / That makes Israel and Palestine / Get along.Sheer fucking genius. Eddie, I'm sure Jonathan Richman is proud.

So, fast forward to now. They're Pitchfork darlings, they've played NYC 1,673 times, closed last year's Coachella (in a tent, but hey...) and just finished their second album. It's called It's A Bit Complicated, and it is. Well, moreso than songs like "Little Brother" and "Fight!".

During Summer '06 the band started peddling around new material. One of which was my favorite bootleg of last year: a song called "Nag Nag Nag Nag" (eat that, Cabaret Voltaire). The song is sung by little man lost Eddie Argos with an opening riff stolen right off the Orient Express and lyrics that beg the question, "When will I grow up? And do I really want to?"

Lucky us! They've recorded it. In a studio. Professionally. And here it is, with another gem... "Pump Up The Volume". Eddie, Christian Slater is proud.

Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag

Art Brut - Pump Up The Volume

The band have a quick US tour that includes these dates:

Art Brut April Mini Tour
Apr 17 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
Apr 18 - Brooklyn, NY @ Studio B
Apr 19 - Toronto, Ont @ The Mod Club
Apr 20 - Chicago, IL @ Subterranean
Apr 21 - Los Angeles, CA @ Troubadour

As if that wasn't enough, band showoff, pointer-extroirdinare and power-chording guitarist Jasper Future shows you 10 Steps to Guitar Genius. Professor?

Long Before Rock 'n Roll

I love living in LA sometimes. It's got great weather, beautiful people... um, good weather--you get the idea. The one thing I loathe is that when Coachella time comes around we have to suffer a minor draught of shows, because bands playing the fest can't play the LA area for something like 2 months prior. Lame. But necessary. (I love you Goldenvoice!)

However, a lot of bands do the right thing and schedule shows after the fest. One of those bands is Sweden's Mando Diao. I loved their debut, which a poppy-yet gritty garage rock album that made you move. Simple, and great. This new album is the record that Razorlight wanted to make (3rd time's a charm, Johnny!).

They're back now with their third album called Ode To Ochracy which is out later this month on the 24th on LA Broad fav Mute... conveniently close to their Coachella gig. But, if you can't shell out the MAJOR CASH for a scalped ticket, MD have you covered. The band have just added new dates to their summer US tour:

Monday, May 21st @ The Casbah - San Diego, CA
Tuesday, May 22nd @ The Troubadour - Los Angeles, CA

If you need more proof why you should get the album and catch these Swedes live (as if my opinion wasn't enough, pffft), check out selections form the entire album here:

Mando Diao E-Card

I recommend downloading their single "Long Before Rock 'n Roll". You can check out the vid ovah hea... Hot swedes. Dueling harmonies. Talk of doing it in an invisible car. I'm sold.

Spiderman 3 vs. Batman Forever

I know this is somewhat old news, but I just saw that the new Spiderman 3 soundtrack has a gasp MySpace page. Who saw that coming? All cynicism aside, you get to listen to 3 new tracks from the album by The Walkmen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Snow Patrol. Being the consummate YYY's fan that I am, I couldn't wait to hear their new track "Sealings."

So, I clicked. I listened.

Karen's voice sounds like she's a hostage--restained and urgent, but anchored by her signature nasally sex kitten coos. The guitar playing is delving into what Nick Zinner seems to love most: metal, but never reaches a frenzy. It goes from high paced chugging, to electronically-induced lullaby notes. It's understated and sinister... sexy.

"I want out / I want out...Drop drop down a floor / Shoot Shoot Out Your Mouth / These days I'm scraped from ceilings"

Karen mixes in her newly strong-voced high registered "oohs" in between the "love, love is in the middle" bridge. Lovely. It's a little too long for my tastes with only a verse, bridge and chorus repeated over 4:30, but when I hear you YYY's, I don't complain.

While I was listening I couldn't help but have a flashback to when I was 13 and the day the Batman Forever soundtrack was released. I trudged up to the specialty record shop in Maui and put down the 15 bucks to get the soundtrack. I think I was the only one on the island to buy it. Why was I so excited about a soundtrack? Was it Seal? Nay. Maybe it was me feeling cool for actually knowing who the Flaming Lips were, but beside all that I fell in LOVE with this soundtrack. It had PJ Harvey! Mazzy Star (a fucking unbelievable track... seriously, just go buy it in the used section for this song)! Redman rapping about Jim Carrey! U2 actually being sexy! Even the not-so cool bands like Brandy and Seal kill their songs with a layer of sultry Gotham gloom. To put it simply, no movie soundtrack had ever sounded this cool. It made my 13 year old ears liste--and learn a ton.

Which brings me back to Spiderman 3. It's being put out by Record Collection, which has been a US home for Ash and bands who happen to grace S3's soundtrack The Walkmen and Simon Dawes. Even though the "indie scene" is way over saturated with a. bands b. exposure and c. mid-thiry somethings having silly haircuts, it still warms any music lover/indie kid's heart (aka mine) to see such a great cull of bands appearing on a mammoth, mainstream soundtrack.

Let's compare:

Batman Forever Soundtrack

1. U2 - "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"
2. P.J. Harvey - "One Time Too Many"
3. Brandy - "Where Are You Now?"
4. Seal - "Kiss From A Rose"
5. Massive Attack With Tracey Thorn - "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game"
6. Eddi Reader - "Nobody Lives Without Love"
7. Mazzy Star - "Tell Me Now"
8. The Offspring - "Smash It Up"
9. Nick Cave - "There Is A Light"
10. Method Man - "The Riddler"
11. Michael Hutchence - "The Passenger"
12. The Devlins - "Crossing The River"
13. Sunny Day Real Estate - "8"
14. The Flaming Lips - "Bad Days"

It's a toss-up. I guess we'll have to wait until good ol' Spidey is released. But kudos to Wayne & co. for keeping it real 12 years later. Don't worry, Wayne, we like the grey!
